THE COTTAGE

The Norman Carr Cottage is situated on the southern lake shore of Lake Malawi, in the beautiful sheltered bay of Namakoma just 15km south of Monkey Bay. A gentle and restful place where we promise you a memorable Malawian experience. You will be left with fond memories of this charming African country where time stands still, the pace is gentle and the scenery is stunning. Malawi has much to offer, sun drenched beaches, turquoise waters abounding with brightly colored cichlid fishes, great for snorkeling and diving.

Discover the magic of the open air aquariums which the southern lake shore is renowned for. We offer daily trips to various dive sites and remote islands for snorkeling. One can witness the majestic flight of the fish eagles on these trips.Lake Malawi lies in central Africa at the southern end of the great rift valley. With an area of 30 000sq km it is the third largest lake in Africa. When Livingston first saw the lake with its winking galaxies he called it a ‘Lake of Stars’. As the sun catches the many facets of the water, the lake twinkles like the stars above. As day turns into night and the moon replaces the sun the lake takes on a whole new beauty with the moon creating a “stairway to heaven”. The lake definitely has a magic of its own.

THE LODGE

Awaken to the call of the African Fish Eagle for another glorious day at the charming Norman Carr Cottage situated along the sandy beaches on the southern shores of Lake Malawi. This idyllic romantic retreat is right on the beach tucked away under a conopy of large indigenous trees, a perfect hideaway of sun drenched beaches and turquoise waters.

Our renowned cuisine offers full catered home cooked meals that are enjoyed in the open beach dining area overlooking the sparkling waters of Lake Malawi.

The rooms are spacious and airy with our signature open air showers, king-size beds and coffee/tea making facilities.Inclusive day’s activities offer canoeing and our morning snorkeling trip and the feeding of the fish eagles from our steel launch ‘ Bonnie Alfie’An evening cruise with a chilled glass of wine to watch the magical sunset over the lake marks the end of another enchanted ‘Warm Heart of Africa’ day.

The Norman Carr Cottage consists of 4 executive suites and two courtyard rooms. The rate for the front rooms is $135 per person sharing, and $165 for a single.

The courtyard rooms are set back a bit but one can still see the lake. The rate in these rooms is $120 per person sharing and $145 for a single.All rates above include full board and boating as mentioned.

ACTIVITIES

* Snorkeling – There are over 600 species of fish in the lake with new species being discovered all the time. The fish life is abundant which makes snorkeling very popular. Our boat M.V. Bonnie Alfie goes out daily to various dive sites. One can enjoy a spectacular show from the fish eagles on these trips.
* Canoeing – is a lovely family activity as the paddle skis are very easy to use. The lake is so clear on calm days that one can see the fish swiming under you as you gently paddle along.* Water skiing – or other fun activity can be arranged behind our speed boat
* Bird Watching – The bird life is varied and plentiful. Bird watching can be done in the bush behind the lodge , or just sit in the garden and they will come to you.
* Monkey Bay visits – Another favorite is a tour of the Monkey Bay. Here one can get the real feel of village life. Go shopping in the market with Taffy for the daily fruit and vegetables.
* Relax and read you book in one of our hanging chairs on the beach, or enjoy a Malawi gin and tonics in the swimming pool.
* Mountain Climbing – There is a rather challenging climb to the top of the mountain behind the lodge. Once you get to the top the views are stunning so well worth the effort.
* Golf – There is a 9 hole mashie course about 20km from our guest lodge. One can hire golf equipment from the pro shop if need be.
* Sun down cruise – An evening cruise with a chilled glass of wine to watch the magical sunset over the lake end another day at The Norman Carr Cottage.
